The story of BuildIT reaches back to September 2013 when the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) had the courage to convene the ‘first ever’ public outreach event by a public agency to LGBT/Allied construction service firms for the construction of the $2.2B Phase One of the now Salesforce Transit Center. Fast forward to 2020 when 26 remarkable LGBT/Allied entrepreneurs and professionals founded BuildOUT California. At the time these Founders thought that California, being the world’s 5th largest economy, would be a great place to connect, advocate and build capacity for its Associates, Industry Leaders and Stakeholders.
However – leading Design and Construction Companies who operate nationally and internationally had other thoughts. They wanted BuildOUT California to ‘work their magic’ everywhere they were. Thus was the impetus for BuildIT which is now the world’s largest industry association dedicated to the sustainable development of LGBT/Allied businesses in architecture, engineering, construction-services, program/construction management, material suppliers, large-scale real estate development, affordable housing and related industries.
