BuildIT began collaborating with the Washington State Office of Minority and Women's Business Enterprises (OMWBE) in Mid-2024 as we were preparing to officially welcome Terri Mestas as Sound Transit’s new Deputy CEO for Megaproject Delivery. Not only was that event a resounding success, but we were profoundly impressed with OMWBE’s commitment to developing an LGBTQ Business Enterprise certification for Washington State. We immediately began connecting OMWBE to resources we knew would be highly effective in building their program. While BuildIT knows that ‘getting certified’ is just one step in the right direction toward growing the pool of qualified firms, building capacity in the marketplace, and developing meaningful jobs, we heartily applaud OMWBE for their commitment to ensuring that Historically Underutilized Businesses, and all businesses, have a seat at the table and are welcomed to the competitive bidding process.

The Office of Minority and Women’s Business Enterprises (OMWBE), in partnership with the Washington State LGBTQ Commission, is proud to announce the launch of its newest certification category: LGBTQ-owned small businesses. This important milestone expands Washington’s commitment to inclusion by formally recognizing businesses that are at least 51% owned, operated, and controlled by individuals who identify as LGBTQ+.

 

Starting July 2025, LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs can apply to get certified with OMWBE in the State Certification program. Businesses may be eligible for multiple state certifications. Learn more on OMWBE’s website and apply now!
